The US and Russia accuse each other of the lack of concessions on Ukraine at the UN
Budrigannews.com – As calls for a ceasefire and diplomacy to end the war started by Moscow’s invasion nine months ago grow at the United Nations, the United States and Russia accused each other of not being interested in peace talks with Ukraine.
A U.N. Security Council meeting on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine was addressed by Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, who stated that Moscow had noted “interest from a significant majority” of U.N. member states in a diplomatic settlement.
“We are taking this very seriously as a response. He added, “We confirm our willingness to conduct negotiations,” but that the objective would be to “eradicate the root causes that forced us to start our special military operation (SMO).”
At first, Moscow stated that its goal was to “denazify” Ukraine by removing leaders it deemed to be nationalists and “disarm” it so that it could not pose a threat to Russia. Western nations believe that Russia’s true initial objectives were to overthrow Ukraine’s pro-Western government and defeat the country’s military.
“Both Ukraine and Ukraine want peace. greater than any other nation. Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine’s U.N. Ambassador, stated, “Our territory has been invaded.” Please keep this in mind each time Moscow tries to convince us that the victim resists peace efforts rather than the aggressor.”
Nebenzia said that Western nations weren’t interested in a diplomatic solution for Ukraine because they were expanding weapons deliveries to Kyiv.
“What you’re seeing right now is a war going on between the West and Russia… Because of this, we have no choice but to carry on with the goals of our SMO,” Nebenzia stated.
Recently, Russia has attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Martin Griffiths, the head of U.N. aid, told the Security Council on Tuesday that this had left millions of people without heat, electricity, or water, making the humanitarian crisis that Russia’s invasion on February 24 worse.
Deputy U.S. Ambassador Lisa Carty told the 15-member council, “President Putin’s escalating barrages on Ukraine’s infrastructure are evidence that he has no genuine interest in negotiation or meaningful diplomacy.”
She stated, “Rather, he is attempting to break Ukraine’s will to fight by bombing and freezing its civilians into submission.”
Since February, the United Nations Security Council has met dozens of times about Ukraine, but Russia, along with Britain, China, France, and the United States, has a veto. As a result, the council cannot take any meaningful action.
“It is not enough to have more and more meetings to inform the international community without ever offering a genuine alternative to war,” Gabon’s Deputy U.N. Ambassador Edwige Koumby Missambo told the council, “given the disarray and despair of the population already weakened by months of war.”
She stated, “The time has come to negotiate the end of the war.”
Russia has requested that the council meet once more on Friday to talk about weapons that “fall into the hands of bandits and terrorists” elsewhere in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa from the Ukraine conflict.
