The second round of elections between Ray Curry and Shawn Fain

Budrigannews.com – A court-appointed monitor said on Monday that United Auto Workers (UAW) President Ray Curry will face reform presidential candidate Shawn Fain in a run-off election because none of the five candidates won a majority.

In the election, Fain narrowly trailed Curry, a reform candidate who wants the UAW to take a more confrontational stance in auto contract negotiations and wants to end a two-tier compensation system that pays younger workers less.

In the elections, six reform candidates were elected to other officer positions.Reformers may win a majority of the 14 UAW executive board seats in the run-off election, which will also determine a vice president and regional director race.By February 28, ballots must be submitted.

In the past, delegates were used to select UAW officers. In a 2021 referendum, members approved direct elections that were required as part of a settlement that the US Justice Department made in 2020 to end a corruption investigation.

Every UAW officer has been selected from an administrative candidate pool for more than three decades.
Curry has been a member of the UAW since 1992 and serves as the union’s president since June 2021.

Fain has been a member of the United Auto Workers for more than two decades. He has been an international representative and an officer at a local in Indiana that represents workers at a Stellantis casting plant.

About 375,000 Americans are members of the UAW.

According to Fain, “This is our shot for true reform of the UAW and putting the power and control of our union back in the hands of the membership by electing leaders who will be held accountable by the membership” is our chance to restore the union’s power and control.

Curry stated that the new board would be sworn into office on December 12. Our individuals have spoken,” Curry said, saying he is sure board individuals have “a dream of fortifying our extraordinary association.”

Contracts of employment with General Motors (NYSE:), Ford Motor CompanyGM and LG Energy Ultium’s joint venture battery cell manufacturing plant in Ohio will hold a vote this week on whether to join the United Auto Workers. and Chrysler-parent Stellantis expire at the end of 2023.

Several UAW officers, including two former presidents, pleaded guilty to embezzling millions of dollars for their own benefit. They spent the money on liquor, cigars, golf outings, and expensive hotel stays.

In 2021, Stellantis’ North American operating subsidiary FCA US admitted to making illegal payments to UAW officers totaling $3.5 million and paid a $30 million fine.
