Budrigannews.com – The President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, traveling to Portugal from the COP27 Summit, showed that improving relations with foreign countries and their image abroad is one of his top priorities as President.
The left, which won over right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro in last month’s presidential election, is scheduled to begin its 1st term on May 3. Until then, he has a mission to tell the world that “Brazil is back.”
In Egypt, Lula met with climate envoys from China and the United States, as well as EU climate Policy Chief Frans Timmermans and UN S.G. Antonio Guterres.
During Bolsonaro’s 4-year term, relations between Brazil and other countries frayed.
On Wednesday, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva received a superstar welcome at COP27, promising the rainforest nation to tackle the climate crisis and proposing to hold future UN climate talks.
In Portugal, Lula will meet President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister Antonio Costa on Friday. He wrote on Twitter that Portugal was “Brazil’s important partner in Europe.”
After landing, the President-elect had lunch at a restaurant in Lisbon and was welcomed by a crowd of supporters. Brazilians make up Portugal’s largest immigrant community, and Lisbon has the largest number of Brazilian voters outside of South America.
The COP27 Summit was his first foreign visit since Lula was elected, but Portugal is his first bilateral visit.
“I believe that by choosing Portugal as the first country for a post-election bilateral visit, he is giving a very strong signal,” Foreign Minister João Clavinho told the Rusa News agency.
Bolsonaro did not visit Portugal during his tenure and canceled a meeting with the Portuguese president in Brazil on May 7 this year.
“Let’s resume the dialogue for the best of our people,”” Lula said on Twitter.
