The new software from Volkswagen will be provided on Dec 15
Budrigannews.com – Volkswagen (ETR:) Three company sources told Reuters that the company’s CEO will try to turn his predecessor’s vision into deliverable goals by presenting a new software and vehicle platform strategy to the supervisory board of the automobile manufacturer on December 15.
Oliver Blume, who took over in September, has been working on the plans with the brands of the German group, which include low-priced Volkswagens and Skodas as well as high-end Audis and Porsches.
Herbert Diess, Herbert Diess’s predecessor, was hailed as a visionary for committing Europe’s largest automobile manufacturer, whose reputation had been damaged by an emissions cheating scandal, to an electric future. However, he was also criticized for his occasionally erratic leadership, particularly for Cariad’s delays and cost overruns.
“The software and the reality check in that area come first. The software must then be transferred to the products. “Things that were not decided over multiple years before are now being settled very quickly,” stated a source close to the company’s decision-making process. “Both have to fit together.”
Reuters has been informed by people who are familiar with the situation that a new software platform called 2.0, which was supposed to be used across the fleet starting in 2026 and would enable so-called Level 4 autonomous driving, will be delayed until the end of the decade. A likely start in 2028 was predicted by one of their sources.
The 2.0 platform will be improved with the additional time. From next year, premium electric models like the e-Macan and Audi Q6 e-tron will use the 1.2 platform. In the meantime, the 1.1 platform, which is used in a wider range of the group’s vehicles, will get updates.
According to the sources, the costs of the delay were not yet known.
According to Handelsblatt, the board meeting on December 15 would cost 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) to keep software competitive until the end of the decade under Blume’s new plans.
Volkswagen didn’t say anything.
According to a source who spoke with Reuters last month, Blume is also reviewing Diess’ plan for a new 2 billion euro plant to manufacture the VW brand’s Trinity electric model. Blume has been CEO of the Porsche brand since 2015 and continues to hold that position as CEO of the group.
