The most expensive Thanksgiving this year
Budrigannews.com -Inflation may be slowing in certain areas, but it’s still affecting holiday meals quite a bit.
According to the 37th annual survey by the Bureau of Agriculture, Thanksgiving dinners cost 20 percent more in the United States this year. The report provides a snapshot of the average cost of 10 traditional holidays and is based on a survey of 224 online and U.S. stores.
The biggest increase is for the filling mixture, which has increased by 69% due to the shortage of flour caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In contrast, the price of blueberries has fallen by 14% as a result of overproduction.
Roger Cryan, chief economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, said in a conference call with reporters that a major factor in the price increase was driving up farmers’ input costs. “Fuel costs have almost doubled and, in many cases, fertilizer prices have tripled.”
Bird flu plays a role in Turkey’s inflation, but Cryan added that buying smaller birds that have a higher supply this year could be another way to save money, with production down only 2 percent from the previous year and the prices you buy them at are better near the holidays.
