The leader of the Islamic State blew himself up-source
Budrigannews.com – According to fighters who were involved in the conflict, Abu al-Hassan al-Hashemi al-Quraishi, the leader of the Islamic State (IS) militant group, committed suicide in the town of Jasem after he and his aides were surrounded by local fighters.
On Wednesday, the U.S. military said that the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) carried out an operation in the northwest of the Deraa province that resulted in his death.
After Russian-mediated reconciliation agreements in 2018 returned Damascus to control of southern Syria, the province was handed over to the Syrian army.
According to the sources, who were Syrian Free Army fighters, relatives of comrades who died in combat, and Jasem residents, Quraishi and his aides had been discovered in a secret hideout in a house.
“After our fighters succeeded in storming their hideout, the leader and a companion blew themselves up with suicide belts,” said Salem al Horani, a resident of Jasem and former fighter who participated in the siege of the three houses where the IS cell was discovered.
The FSA had gotten backing from the West and Bay states until they pulled out help in 2018, yet its warriors stayed nearby after the compromise bargains under which they gave over weighty weapons yet were permitted to keep light arms.
A spokesperson for the organization stated that Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Quraishi has been selected as Islamic State’s new leader. He said Quraishi was killed while “battling foes of God”, without explaining.
In 2014, Islamic State seized substantial swaths of Iraq and Syria from the chaos of the neighboring Iraqi civil war.
From a mosque in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul that year, the former IS caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi established an Islamic caliphate and declared himself caliph of all Muslims.
In 2017, Iraqi and international forces defeated Islamic State in Mosul, ending the group’s brutal rule, during which it killed and executed thousands of people in the name of its narrow interpretation of Islam.
