The Brazilian army is being forced to stage a coup, why?
Budrigannews.com -The Brazilian military, facing calls from supporters of President J. Bolsonaro to stage a coup after his election loss, has accused the general of being ridiculed as a “watermelon.”
Because J. Bolsonaro lost Oct. 30 Vote against his left-wing rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a small but committed group of his supporters across Brazil, implored the military to overturn the election results, the military said.
More recently, it seems that some of them have lost patience with the reticence of the intervening military, accusing them of being communists who support Lula.
Twitter user Eugenia Moreira da Costa, along with photos of Brazil’s top military leaders, wrote: “These are 4 communist generals who are against the people and want the Lula government.” “They are watermelon generals, green on the outside and red on the inside.”
It proved a bridge too far for the military.
Inside Nov. 16 Communiqué seen by Reuters, the army’s communications chief said he had been instructed by the head of the force to repudiate the post “with lies and malicious mention about members of the Army’s High Command.”
General Jose Ricardo Vendramin Nunes, without mentioning the watermelon meme, wrote that it was “a malicious criminal attempt to tarnish the personal honor of a soldier who served for more than 40 years.”
The post reached “disinformation,” he added, “the Brazilian army remains united and united.””
For months, Bolsonaro had sought military support for unfounded accusations that the country’s electronic voting system was responsible for fraud. It sparked fears that Bolsonaro might not accept defeat in last month’s elections, and that the military that ruled Brazil during the 1964-85 junta might support him.
Bolsonaro has not prevented the peaceful transfer of power to Lula, and the military has so far rejected calls to launch a coup.
