Surrogacy for foreigners is prohibited in Russia
Budrigannews.com – A bill that prohibits foreigners from using Russian surrogate mothers was approved on Thursday in the second and third readings by the lower house of the Russian parliament.
A surrogate child born in Russia would also automatically be granted Russian citizenship. Surrogate mothers from Russia can still be used by couples whose spouses both hold Russian citizenship.
Although paid surrogacy is legal in Russia, religious groups have criticized the practice for making the birth of children a commodity.
According to Vyacheslav Volodin, Speaker of the State Duma, the decision to outlaw surrogacy in Russia was made to safeguard Russian children.
