Sports and National Pride

Budrigannews.com – The relationship between sporting success and national pride is well known. In the study, Great Britain gained 20 percentage points more sporting pride in a five-year span. The increase in sporting pride came after Great Britain won the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and delivered a successful and memorable event. It also grew when the country performed better in the previous Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2004 and 2008.

Results on national pride

Researchers have studied the determinants of national pride in sports. In this study, they examined ten domain-specific sources of pride, and found that’sports’ consistently ranked highest among the sources of national pride. In the overall multi-nation sample, sporting pride is comprised of positive scores of’very proud’ or’somewhat proud.’ Overall, the results suggest that sports contribute significantly to national pride and that the perceptions of sporting pride are relatively stable across nations.

In addition to evaluating sports as a measure of national pride, researchers found that people’s overall wellbeing and satisfaction with life are influenced by the sports industry. Although not a large percentage of the population is influenced by sports success, it can still lead to positive subjective well-being. In addition, sporting success has been seen as a proxy for national pride, though this has not been directly examined in the past. This study uses a variable that measures national pride in sports.

Results on sporting pride

A study published by Elling et al. examined the determinants of sporting and general national pride. Overall, results show that people in the host and winning nations are more proud of their nation. However, this increase is temporary. Overall, the results indicate that sport has a positive influence on the nation’s pride. The authors also consider the effect of the winter Olympic Games on sporting nationalism. In their study, people reported higher levels of pride in their home countries than in their opponents.

The study examined the relationship between sports performance and overall national pride. Results indicate that sport-related pride is positively related to participation in sports and the number of sporting events. However, the findings indicate that the importance of hosting such events is higher than success at sporting events. Nevertheless, further research is needed to examine this relationship. In the meantime, sports-related pride is a significant predictor of social inclusion. And in addition to sport-related pride, the sport-related success of a country may also promote national unity.

Increases in sporting pride when one domain of national pride decreases

Increases in sporting pride of the nation occur as a counterbalance to a decline in other domains of national self-esteem. In a recent study, Dutch people expressed a slightly increased sense of pride when the Netherlands hosted a football tournament. This finding has been replicated in many other countries. The data on sportive nationalism are particularly useful for describing long-term trends and shifting levels of national pride.

In Germany, sportive nationalism was the most common source of national pride, particularly among younger generations and those from lower socioeconomic status. In the former GDR, sportive nationalism was the most widespread domain of national pride, and this is reflected in the rise of the West German soccer team. Likewise, the differences between the East and West German populations show that the former sport-centered identity politics had a socialization effect.

Evidence for a relationship between sporting success and national pride

In a recent survey of 21,061 adults, researchers found that people in developing and middle-income countries get the biggest boost from sporting achievements. For example, nine out of 10 Kenyans cited their country’s Olympic success as a source of national pride. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was happy to see that the dream of competing at the Olympic Games remains as alive and exciting as it was in the first decade of the century. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, eighty-six percent of respondents said their Olympic performance affected their national pride.

However, these findings are limited. In a study of German citizens, sporting success and subjective well-being were related. In Germany, for example, two-thirds of the population said that they felt pride when their national athletes won a major tournament. Interestingly, the positive effects of sporting success were only short-lived, and the effect was pronounced among the most highly-performing athletes. This is not the only study that has looked at the relationship between sport and national pride.
