South African President won’t resign despite Corruption Scandal
Budrigannews.com – A spokesman for the presidential administration said on Saturday that after allies rallied around him to stay, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will not resign and will run for a second term as leader of the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
An independent parliamentary commission said in a report that Ramaphosa may have violated his oath regarding millions of dollars that were found on his private hunting farm. This raised questions about Ramaphosa’s authority as head of state.
In a text message to reporters, Ramaphosa’s spokesman Vincent Magwenya said: “President Ramaphosa does not resign on the basis of an erroneous report and does not step aside.”
“The President listened to the unequivocal message from the branches of the ruling party, which nominated him for a second term as the leadership of the ANC,” the statement said.
Ramaphosa has not been charged with any crimes and has denied any wrongdoing.
The ANC announced that a special meeting of the National Working Committee will be held on Sunday, and the next steps of Ramaphosa will be determined at the meeting of the National Executive Committee on Monday.
The spokesman said the report and its conclusions would be challenged by the President.
“Challenging such an obviously erroneous report in the long term is in the interests of our constitutional democracy and its sustainability.”
