Serial killer released in Nepal
Budrigannews.com – Due to his age, the French national Charles Sobhraj, also known as “the serpent” and accused by police of being behind a series of murders in the 1970s and 1980s, was released by Nepal’s Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Over 20 young Western backpackers are alleged to have been killed in Asia by 78-year-old Sobhraj, usually by drugging their food or drink. He had served 19 of his 20 years in prison.
In the middle of the 1970s, Thailand issued a warrant for his arrest on charges that he had drugged and killed six women, all of whom were wearing bikinis, on a Pattaya beach. He was known as the “bikini killer.”
Following his escape from a prison in India in the middle of the 1980s, where he was serving 21 years on charges of murder, he was also known as “the serpent” due to his ability to conceal himself. He was eventually located and imprisoned there until 1997.
The BBC and Netflix (NASDAQ:) last year “The Serpent,” a television drama about his crimes, was jointly produced.
After being released from India, Sobhraj went back to France. In 2003, he was taken into custody at a casino in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and later charged there with the murder of American backpacker Connie Jo Bronzich. Since 2003, he has been imprisoned in a Kathmandu jail with high security.
After serving 19 years in prison, judges Sapana Pradhan Malla and Til Prasad Shrestha of the Supreme Court issued an order on Wednesday directing Sobhraj to be released and expelled from Nepal.
The Supreme Court’s spokesperson, Bimal Paudel, stated, “The court has ordered that if there is no other reason to keep him in jail, he should be released and sent back to his country within 15 days.”
In Nepal, life sentences are typically followed by 20 years in prison.

Ram Bandhu Sharma, Sobhraj’s lawyer, said, “He had already served 95% of his jail term and should have released earlier due to his age.” He also said that Sobhraj could be released from prison by Thursday.
