Budrigannews.com – On Wednesday, rare footage of the Titanic ocean liner on the Atlantic floor will be released, decades after the ship’s wreck was discovered and more than a century after it hit an iceberg and sank.
Just a few months after explorers discovered the wreckage in 1985, the footage from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) was shot approximately two miles (three kilometers) below the surface of the ocean. The majority of it has never been made available to the general public.
Numerous Titanic-related documentaries have featured footage of the wreckage site since the discovery. Although brief clips of the initial dives have been shown, a longer, uncut 80-minute video will be uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday.
“Marks the first time humans set eyes on the ill-fated ship since 1912 and includes many other iconic scenes,” the WHOI stated of the footage’s release.
When it was built, the Titanic was thought to be nearly impregnable. At the time, it was the largest ocean liner in use. On April 14, 1912, it was making its inaugural voyage from Southampton, England, to New York when it hit an iceberg in the Atlantic. The sinking resulted in the deaths of over 1,500 people, shocking the entire world and causing outrage over the lack of lifeboats on board.
On September 1, 1985, a team from WHOI and the French National Institute of Oceanography discovered the sunken ship, split in two, southeast of Newfoundland, Canada.
In July 1986, cameras on a human-occupied submersible and a small, remote-controlled vessel that maneuvered through tight spaces captured footage from 11 dives.
The unveiling of the footage coincides with the 25th anniversary of the rerelease of “Titanic,” directed by James Cameron, in 1997. 11 Academy Awards were given to the film, including one for best picture.
Cameron said in a statement, “The human stories embodied in the great ship continue to resonate.” WHOI is assisting in the telling of a significant portion of a story that spans generations and the globe by releasing this footage.”
