Russia’s manufacturing activity grew in December

Budrigannews.com – A survey released on Thursday revealed that domestic demand more than made up for declining export sales to propel growth in Russian manufacturing in December. This resulted in the sector’s fastest monthly increase in job creation in over 21 years.

The Global S&P (NYSE:) Although the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) decreased from 53.2 in November to 53.0 in December, it remained above the 50 threshold that distinguishes expansion from contraction. The reading in November was the highest since January 2017.

S&P Global stated, “Higher production levels were linked to the acquisition of new customers and another monthly upturn in new orders.” The rate of output growth was the second-fastest since August 2020, even though it slowed from its recent peak in November.

According to S&P Global, the impact of sanctions against Moscow due to its actions in Ukraine contributed to the drop in foreign client demand. The contraction in new export orders weighed on the growth of total sales.

This year, logistical delays and material shortages have resulted from Western restrictions and a massive corporate exodus from Russia.

S&P Global stated, “In December, suppliers’ delivery times at Russian manufacturing firms continued to lengthen, as vendor performance deteriorated further.”

After President Vladimir Putin announced a “partial mobilization” in October, the sector lost steam. The “partial mobilization” resulted in the enlistment of approximately 300,000 reservists, primarily young working men, for Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.

However, since then, it has demonstrated resilience, as evidenced by the survey showing that in December, output expectations increased to their second highest level since March 2019 in anticipation of increased client demand.

Companies attributed the rise in new orders to the sector’s rapid growth in employment, which was the fastest since September 2001.
