Budrigannews.com – According to the Belarusian defense ministry, a delegation led by Russia’s ground forces commander Oleg Salyukov visited Belarus on Thursday to examine a joint force stationed there’s combat readiness.
In the most recent of a series of reshuffles, Salyukov was named one of the deputy commanders of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. The visit took place a day after that.
Russia and Belarus, which is a close ally of Russia, have increased the size of their joint military unit in Belarus and plan to hold joint aviation drills there starting on Monday.
Ukraine has issued a warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin may attempt to use Belarus to launch a new ground invasion of Ukraine from the north as part of a pattern of activity that includes the exercises.
Alexander Lukashenko, the leader of Belarus, gave Putin permission to use his country as a launchpad to invade Ukraine in February, when Russian forces were defeated in an attempt to take the capital, Kyiv.
According to military analysts, Russia has also trained newly mobilized soldiers who were called up in September to support its forces in Ukraine at Belarusian facilities.
In contrast to Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine, Belarus has not deployed its own troops there.
