Budrigannews.com – A person familiar with the situation said on Monday that former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been subpoenaed by federal prosecutors seeking documents regarding payments he received from former President Donald Trump or his presidential campaign. Giuliani helped to amplify Trump’s false claims about widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
The person, who declined to be identified because they were not permitted to speak publicly about the matter, stated that the subpoena, which was issued in November, also requests Giuliani to provide testimony.
The nature of the investigation by the U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., which began prior to the appointment of Special Counsel Jack Smith to oversee Trump investigations, is largely unknown.
Reuters inquired for clarification, but the former mayor, who is Trump’s personal attorney, did not respond.
A request for clarification was sent to a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, but she did not immediately respond.
According to the source, the subpoena requested copies of any retainer agreements between Trump and Giuliani or the Trump campaign and Giuliani, as well as records of payments and who made them.
A District of Columbia attorney ethics committee found in December that Giuliani’s work on a Trump-failed lawsuit challenging the results of the 2020 election was in violation of at least one attorney ethics rule.
