Protesters in Peru demand the resignation of the President

Budrigannews.com – After weeks of bloody clashes that were sparked by the removal of former President Pedro Castillo, which resulted in the deaths of at least 42 people, thousands of people peacefully protested against the new government and president in Peru’s capital, Lima, on Thursday.
Olga Espejo, a protester, said, “Why are you turning your back on the people, there are so many deaths, for God’s sake, stop this massacre.” She was urging President Dina Boluarte, who was Castillo’s vice president in the past, to step down.
She stated, “Ms. Boluarte, they are using you.”
“Dina asesina!” shouted protesters ( In the capital’s first large-scale protest since the new year, demonstrators carried cardboard coffins, photos of the victims, and anti-government slogans through the streets of Lima.
Trade unions and leftist groups organized the march, which went off without a hitch. Peru has seen the worst outbreak of violence in more than two decades with the clashes that began at the beginning of December.
Labor Minister Eduardo Garcia took to Twitter to announce his resignation during the protest on Thursday. He said that the country required an apology for the deaths and urged the government to acknowledge that “mistakes have been made that must be corrected.”
Garcia stated that the situation could not wait until April 2024, two years earlier than required, when elections have been proposed.
The crisis has affected the country’s most important mining sector, which saw a large mine attacked by attackers and a tin mine shut down in memory of the dead. Cusco, a popular tourist destination, closed its airport once more on Thursday.
“Not because she does not want to,” Prime Minister Alberto Otarola stated earlier on Thursday, citing constitutional requirements to consolidate the succession.
He stated, “Leaving the presidency would open a floodgate for anarchy and misrule that is very dangerous.”
On Tuesday, an investigation into Boluarte and a few high-ranking ministers was launched by Peru’s top prosecutor’s office. On the same day, a vote of confidence in the new government was passed by Peru’s Congress, which strongly opposed the leftist former leader Castillo.
