Prince Harry has made peace with a local newspaper over a libel case
Budrigannews.com – London’s High Court heard on Tuesday that Prince Harry and Associated Newspapers, one of the largest media publishers in Britain, have agreed to temporarily suspend his libel claim in an effort to settle the matter.
In February, the Duke of Sussex filed a lawsuit against the publisher due to an article in the Mail on Sunday alleging that he attempted to conceal details of his legal battle with Britain’s interior ministry to reinstate his police protection.
Harry, who is the son of King Charles and left the throne with his wife Meghan two years ago, claims that an “unremittingly negative” article about his ongoing case against the Home Office was published in the Mail on Sunday. In July, the High Court ruled that it was defamatory.
However, Associated Newspapers contends that the article is “an expression of opinion” regarding Harry’s public statements regarding his legal case regarding police protection and is defending the libel lawsuit.
On Tuesday, the case was brought back to court for a preliminary hearing, where Harry’s lawyer Jane Phillips said that the parties had agreed to put the case on hold until mid-January to try to negotiate a settlement “if that is indeed possible.”
Associated Newspapers requested additional information from Harry regarding a meeting in January 2020 at the royal Sandringham estate, during which he claims he offered to pay for or contribute to police protection.
Judge Barbara Fontaine ordered Harry’s attorneys to provide “clarification” regarding the offer he claimed to have made. She added that this would “assist the parties… in the attempts about () settlement, which I hope are successful.”
The hearing on Tuesday came just a few days before the much-anticipated Netflix (NASDAQ:) release. documentary about Meghan and Harry.
