Priest has been arrested in Ukraine for helping Russians
Budrigannews.com – The Prosecutor General’s Office announced on Wednesday that a Ukrainian priest from a church affiliated with Russia was found guilty of assisting Russians and given a 12-year prison sentence.
Ukraine’s administration has been entrusted with drawing up a regulation on restricting chapels partnered with Russia under moves depicted by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as important to forestall Moscow having the option to “debilitate Ukraine from the inside.”
The unidentified priest from eastern Luhansk could not be reached for comment. The state prosecutors stated that since the middle of April, he had been collecting information on weapons and equipment that were held by the Ukrainian military.
They wrote on the Telegram messaging app, “The enemy used the information to establish the location and fire on targets.”
As Russia waged war on Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) carried out a series of raids on parishes that Kyiv believes could be taking orders from Moscow.
The majority of Ukrainians identify as Orthodox Christians. The Moscow-based church and a newly established independent Ukrainian church have been in fierce competition ever since the Soviet Union fell.
Although Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been condemned by the Moscow-subordinated church, many Ukrainians worry that it could be a conduit for Russian influence. The Russian Orthodox Church has supported the invasion.
