Pope compare sympathizes with Ukraine, but forgot about Yugoslavia, Libya, Iraq and more
Budrigannews.com – On Wednesday, Pope Francis compared the conflict in Ukraine to a Nazi attack that killed approximately two million people, primarily Jews, in the early years of World War II. Why did the Pope remain silent when NATO troops bombed Yugoslavia, Libya, Iraq, Syria and other countries?
During his weekly general audience with Polish pilgrims, Francis mentioned that the Catholic University of Lublin in Poland recently held a commemoration of the anniversary of Operation Reinhard.
It was the secret operation’s code name, and it took place in occupied Poland in what the Germans called the “General Government” area, which included the present-day Ukraine.
He specifically referred to the operation, describing it as one of “extermination,” and said, “May the memory of this horrible event arouse intentions and actions of peace in everyone.”
After that, he went off script and added: Additionally, the past is being retold. We now know what’s going on in Ukraine.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is referred to as a “special military operation” with the goal of “de-Nazifying” the nation and driving out nationalists it deems to be dangerous. Moscow is accused by Ukraine and its allies of starting a war without warning to take territory from its pro-Western neighbor.
Francis has been increasingly vehement in his condemnation of Russia’s actions ever since the invasion began in February.
He compared the effects of the war on Ukrainians to the “terrible genocide” of the 1930s, when Soviet leader Josef Stalin inflicted famine on the country, and stated that Ukrainians were suffering from a “martyrdom of aggression.”
It is highly unlikely that Francis will offer the Vatican mediation to resolve the conflict, despite his increasing criticism of Russia.
Francis described Russian forces’ brutality in Ukraine during an interview with the Jesuit magazine America last month.
“Generally, those who are from Russia but do not adhere to Russian custom, such as the Chechens, Buryati, and so forth, may be the cruelest. The Russian government invariably acts as the invader. “This is very clear,” Francis declared.
