Political crisis in Peru threatens to dissolve Congress
Budrigannews.com – Peru’s beset President Pedro Castillo said on Wednesday he would break down Congress by pronouncement, hours before he was set to confront a reprimand preliminary, tossing the Andean country into an all out protected emergency.
The move led to the resignations of key ministers from Castillo’s government and allegations of a “coup” from members of Congress and others. It appears to have broken normal legal channels to resolve disagreements between government powers.
Castillo called for new legislative elections and announced a “government of exception” in a speech. He stated that he would respect the nation’s current, world-leading economic model. 2 producer, despite the temporary dissolution of Congress.
It was not clear whether Castillo would be able to actually remove Congress from office. The third attempt to remove the leftist former teacher from office since taking office last year appeared to be moving forward with the impeachment debate and vote.
Castillo made the following statement in a speech: “In response to the clamor from citizens throughout the country, we make the decision to establish an emergency government aimed at restoring the rule of law and democracy.”
As the equities, bonds, and sol currency of the nation fell, Castillo’s allies appeared to be abandoning him. Cesar Landa, his economy minister and foreign minister, quit because the move “violated” Peru’s constitution, he said.
Landa declared, “I strongly condemn this self-coup,” adding that Castillo had made the decision without Landa’s knowledge or support.
Daniel Soria, the attorney general of Peru, stated that he would file a criminal complaint against President Castillo, claiming that the president had “flagrantly violated the constitution.”
Others, including Ollanta Humala, a former Peruvian president, and other former ministers, referred to Castillo’s action as a “coup d’etat.”
“None of the democrats can back a coup. Pedro Francke, Castillo’s former economy minister, wrote on Twitter, “My total rejection of an unconstitutional closure of Congress.” The presidency cannot be held by anyone who intends to become a dictator.”
According to the head of Peru’s Constitutional Court, Congress ought to appoint Vice President Dina Boluarte as president.
In Peru, which has experienced years of political turmoil, the president and Congress have previously encountered significant disagreements.
Congress was dissolved by President Martin Vizcarra, who was then impeached in 2020. The dissolution of Congress was also announced by former president Alberto Fujimori, who is currently in prison for violating human rights and corruption.
