Political crisis in Peru
Budrigannews.com – On Friday, lawmakers from Peru’s opposition said that President Pedro Castillo was attempting to dissolve the legislature, escalating a political crisis in which the prime minister resigned despite Congress’s refusal to hold a vote of no confidence.
Peru’s independent state powers have been at odds for a long time.Castillo has stated that the legislature and the attorney general have both attempted to overthrow him through criminal investigations and impeachment attempts, respectively.
After Congress denied his request for a confidence vote on the grounds that the legal requirements were not met, Castillo reshuffled his cabinet just before midnight on Thursday.
The purpose of the request for a confidence vote was to exert pressure on Congress with high-stakes consequences like firing the Cabinet and dissolving the parliament.
Castillo accepted his prime minister’s resignation on Thursday and stated that rejecting the request was comparable to Congress holding a vote of no confidence.
Regarding Castillo’s remark, conservative legislator Carlos Anderson told Reuters, “There is an executive coup underway to shut down Congress.”
The Constitution mandates that the entire Cabinet resign in the event of a vote of no confidence from Congress. The president has the authority to call for legislative elections and dissolve parliament if Congress holds a second vote of no confidence.
Roberto Chiabra, a conservative Alliance for Progress legislator and retired military officer, told Reuters, “It is what the President is openly seeking.”
Anibal Torres, the outgoing prime minister, has denied that Congress would be shut down by the confidence vote request.
Right-wing opposition legislators are frantically seeking support to launch a new impeachment trial against Castillo, despite the fact that they have acknowledged that they do not have sufficient votes. Castillo has survived two attempts to impeach him.
After receiving two votes of no confidence, centrist President Martin Vizcarra dissolved Congress in 2019 amid a heated disagreement with the opposition.Vizcarra was ousted by a new Congress the following year due to allegations of corruption.
