Political ads are allowed on Twitter again
Budrigannews.com – As the Elon Musk-owned company seeks to increase revenue, Twitter Inc.’s head of trust and safety confirmed to Reuters on Wednesday that the company will lift its 2019 ban on political advertisements.
On Tuesday, the company announced via tweet that it would align its advertising policy with television and other media outlets and ease restrictions on “cause-based ads” in the United States.
Twitter’s policies are now more in line with those of Meta Platform’s Facebook (NASDAQ:) as well as Alphabet (NASDAQ:) YouTube, owned by Inc., which allows political advertising. Chinese video app TikTok is one platform that still prohibits political advertisements.
The social media company tweeted, “We believe that cause-based advertising can facilitate public conversation around important topics.”
According to Ella Irwin, Twitter’s head of trust and safety, in an email, cause-based advertisements that educate or raise awareness of issues such as voter registration, climate change, or government programs like the Census will be permitted on Twitter.
In 2019, Twitter and other social media companies were widely criticized for allowing election-related misinformation to spread. Ads for social causes were also limited.
Twitter’s then-chief executive tweeted, “We believe political message reach should be earned, not bought,” to announce the move.
Corporate advertisers have fled Tesla since Musk took control of Twitter at the end of October (NASDAQ:).
