Parents of FTX co-founder were threatened with physical violence-lawyer
Budrigannews.com – Lawyers for Sam Bankman-Fried stated on Tuesday that his parents have been receiving physical threats ever since the collapse of their son’s now-defunct FTX cryptocurrency exchange.
The lawyers requested that the names of the two remaining sureties for Bankman-Fried’s $250 million bond not be disclosed in a filing in Manhattan federal court.
Since the conditions of his bail were set, Bankman-Fried has been required to live with his parents, Barbara Fried and Joseph Bankman, under electronic surveillance.
The parents “have in recent weeks become the target of intense media scrutiny, harassment, and threats,” according to his lawyers’ filing on Tuesday. Mr. Bankman-Fried’s parents have, among other things, received a steady stream of threatening correspondence, including messages expressing a desire to physically harm them.
Consequently, the attorneys stated that there was “serious cause for concern” that the additional sureties might be subjected to similar privacy intrusions, threats, and harassment, and that this outweighed any public right to access their identities.
Fried and Bankman are Stanford Law School professors.
They consented to co-sign their child’s security, with the extra guarantees marking separate securities in lower sums.
According to a person who is familiar with the situation, Bankman-Fried is expected to enter a not guilty plea later on Tuesday to the criminal charges that he defrauded investors and stole billions of dollars from FTX.
He is accused of making millions of dollars in political contributions, supporting his Alameda Research hedge fund, purchasing real estate, and using FTX customer deposits in an illegal manner.
