Ontario educational institutions are closed due to a strike

Budrigannews.com – The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced on Sunday that tens of thousands of teachers and education sector workers in the Canadian province of Ontario will resume their strike on Monday.
After failing to reach an agreement with the provincial government regarding increased frontline staff in schools and better pay, approximately 55,000 workers in the education sector in Ontario, the largest province in the country, went on strike on Friday.
Hundreds of schools were forced to close as a result of the walkout by teachers, educational assistants, secretaries, and library workers.
In the past, the Toronto District School Board had stated that all of its 583 schools—which serve 247,000 students—would remain closed while the strike continued.
The Progressive Conservative government led by Ontario Premier Doug Ford has rejected the striking CUPE workers’ wage demands because they are too high and has passed a contentious law to force them into a contract.
The law imposes substantial daily penalties on the striking employees. CUPE has stated that it will fight any imposed fines and pay them if necessary.
