Budrigannews.com – On Friday, Twitter said that only paid subscribers will be able to use text messages as two-factor authentication (or 2FA) to protect their accounts.

“Only Twitter Blue subscribers will be able to use text messages as their two-factor authentication method after March 20,” according to a tweet from the company.

In order to increase account security, two-factor authentication requires account holders to use a second authentication method in addition to a password. Twitter offers two-factor authentication via a security key, authentication app, and text message.

A Wednesday blog post that the company’s tweet linked to stated that the company believes phone-based 2FA is being abused by “bad actors.”

In response to a user’s tweet that the company was changing its policy “because Telcos Used Bot Accounts to Pump 2FA SMS” and that it was losing $60 million annually “on scam SMS,” Twitter owner Elon Musk tweeted “Yup.”

For verified accounts of politicians, famous people, journalists, and other public figures, the blue check mark was previously free. Now, anyone who is willing to pay can use it.

Twitter stated last month that it would charge the same $11 per month for Android subscribers of Twitter Blue as it does for iOS subscribers.
