North Carolina plunged into darkness
Budrigannews.com – A widespread power outage that affected everything from Sunday worship services to golfers teeing off at the well-known Pinehurst Resort may have been caused by vandalism in a central North Carolina county.
About 45,000 homes and businesses were left without power late Saturday night into early Sunday.
Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields stated in a statement that utility workers discovered evidence at multiple electric substations that “indicated intentional vandalism had occurred” when outages began around 7 p.m. on Saturday.
According to the tracking website poweroutage.us, as of Sunday morning, 64% of Moore County’s electric customers were still without power in the mostly rural region located approximately 90 miles (145 kilometers) east of Charlotte.
A spokesperson for Duke Energy (NYSE:), Jeff Brooks,”no estimate on restoration time because a number of facilities are involved and the work will be complicated,” he told the media late Saturday.
On Sunday, neither Brooks nor another Duke Energy representative was immediately available for comment. However, Brooks informed NBC News that he was unable to provide any additional details regarding the possible crime.
The Pinehurst United Methodist Church, which holds three Sunday services, was closed in Pinehurst, the largest community in the county with approximately 20,000 people.
On the church’s Facebook (NASDAQ:), church leaders wrote, “Read your Bible, pray…and stay safe.”leaving open the possibility that its Christmas concert would take place later in the day.
An operator at Pinehurst Resort’s renowned golf course claimed that managers were “scrambling” to ensure that guests who had made reservations could still tee off in the morning.
