New rule on climate-related information by companies will be released in U. S.

Budrigannews.com – According to a recent federal notice, the top securities regulator in the United States has indicated that the long-anticipated rule on company disclosures related to climate change will be published in April.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States stated in a draft proposal that it would require public companies to specify their own direct and indirect emissions of greenhouse gases, referred to as “Scope 1” and “Scope 2,” in addition to certain types of “Scope 3” emissions from suppliers and customers.

The proposal received support from a large number of investors, but prominent business lobbying group the U.S. Chamber of Commerce criticized the requirements as being too complicated and rigid, arguing that business groups should be more selective about the information they provide.

With the caveat that the SEC “may consider or act on any matter earlier or later than the estimated date provided on the agenda,” the notice was made public on January 4 as part of a longer list of federal agenda items.

Special-purpose acquisition companies (also known as “SPACs”) and disclosures pertaining to cybersecurity risks would be governed by additional SEC items scheduled for final action in April.
