Netanyahu gains majority in Israel’s parliament
Budrigannews.com – After his Likud party announced that it had reached an agreement with the Jewish ultra-Orthodox Shas party, Israel’s incoming prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was able to secure a majority in the parliamentary body on Thursday.
Israel held its fifth election in less than four years on Nov. 1, and Netanyahu’s right-wing alliance prevailed. Concern has been raised at home and abroad due to his association with far-right parties.
“All we have finished one more step towards the development of a traditional government that will act to serve Israel’s residents,” Netanyahu said in the explanation.

Although a final coalition agreement has not yet been signed, the agreement with Shas gives Netanyahu control over 64 of the 120 seats in the Knesset.
Aryeh Deri, the leader of Shas, will lead the interior and health ministries during the first half of the government’s term. In the second half, he will take over the finance ministry. During Netanyahu’s tenure, Deri will also be the deputy prime minister.
Veteran politician Deri was found guilty of tax fraud last year, but thanks to a plea deal, he was spared jail time. To allow his return to the cabinet, legislation must be passed by the Knesset.
