NBC Considering Lowering the Number of Prime Time Programming Hours – WSJ
By Sam Boughedda
According to The Wall Street Journal, Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) subsidiary NBC is reportedly considering whether to lower the number of hours it programs in prime time.
The move is said to be part of a potential cost-cutting plan due to what the WSJ describes as NBC’s “diminishing popularity.”
Citing sources, the WSJ stated that in the scenario under consideration, NBC would stop airing programming from 10 to 11 p.m. and hand over those seven hours each week to regional TV stations.
However, they cautioned that the talks are only preliminary, and NBC could decide against such a move, with the broadcaster not officially discussing the matter with its affiliate board.
If the shift were to take place, it wouldn’t be until fall 2023 at the earliest. The report adds that if they went ahead with the decision, it could save the company tens of millions of dollars in content costs.
