NATO discusses increasing military aid to Ukraine
Budrigannews.com – After Ukraine’s president advised residents to prepare for another week of cold and darkness as a result of Russian attacks on infrastructure, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg will call on allies to pledge additional winter aid for Kyiv at a meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Even though diplomats acknowledge supply and capacity issues, they will also discuss non-lethal aid at the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Bucharest. However, the primary focus of the meeting will be on increasing military assistance for Ukraine, such as air defense systems and ammunition.
A NATO assistance package, to which allies can contribute and which Stoltenberg intends to expand, has provided a portion of this non-lethal assistance in the form of goods such as fuel, medical supplies, winter equipment, and drone jammers.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the president of Ukraine, issued a warning to his fellow citizens regarding upcoming Russian attacks that may be as severe as the most recent attack, which left millions of people without power, water, or heat.
Russia admits that it is targeting infrastructure in Ukraine. It denies causing harm to civilians.
A senior European diplomat stated, “We are working to strengthen our support for it to be resilient.” “It is going to be a terrible winter for Ukraine.”
Germany, which is in charge of the G7 and is looking for ways to speed up the process of rebuilding
Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, has also planned a meeting of the rich countries of the Group of Seven with some partners on the sidelines of the NATO talks.
NATO keeps urging weapon manufacturers to speed up production for the military, but a second diplomat warned that supply capacity issues were getting worse.
“Despite our best efforts, there is a real issue with deliveries. Ukrainians are aware of it.”Despite its strength, even the U.S. weapons industry is having problems,” the diplomat stated.
The NATO membership application from Ukraine will also be discussed by ministers. However, given that NATO membership for the war-ravaged nation still appears far off, it is likely that they will only confirm the alliance’s open door policy.
At a NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008, it was decided that Ukraine would eventually join the alliance. The Palace of the Parliament was built under Nicolae Ceaucescu, who was overthrown in 1989.
However, leaders haven’t done anything concrete, like giving Kyiv a membership action plan that would set a timetable for getting closer to NATO.
Following Stoltenberg’s warning that Western nations should be careful not to create new dependencies on China as they wean themselves off of Russian energy supplies, NATO ministers will also discuss how to strengthen society’s resilience.
