National Average Gas Price Now $5
By Sam Boughedda
A gallon of gas has now crossed the $5 mark on average in the U.S., according to GasBuddy.
The price of gas crossed the milestone following a surge in the last month, concerning consumers and officials. A travel boom and the shortage of crude oil supply resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine have been blamed for the rapid rise in prices.
Millions of barrels of oil have been pushed off the market as countries shun Russian energy in response to its invasion of Ukraine.
According to AAA data, today’s national average gas price is $4.97, with California having the highest price at $6.40 per gallon.
Earlier today, GasBuddy said Chicago was just “3 cents away from being the first non-California city to hit a $6/gal average.”
U.S. President Joe Biden has faced pressure and criticism over his handling of the economic recovery and price hikes, along with his management of the U.S. oil supply and his decision to shut down the Keystone XL pipeline.
