Budrigannews.com – Greek police said on Saturday that they had rescued 92 illegal migrants who were found naked and some with injuries close to the country’s northern border with Turkey.
Greek police released a statement announcing the discovery of the men-only migrants on Friday near the Evros river, which marks the border between Greece and Turkey.
Greek police and EU border agency Frontex conducted an investigation and discovered evidence that the migrants entered Greek territory in rubber dinghies from Turkey.
According to the statement:
“Border policemen…discovered 92 illegal migrants without clothes, some of whom had injuries on their bodies.” The men’s clothing had disappeared without explanation.
Turkish treatment of migrants was a “shame for civilisation,” according to Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi in a tweet. He stated that the incident was expected to be investigated by Ankara.
Approximately a million refugees fleeing poverty and war in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan entered Greece through Turkey in 2015 and 2016, placing it at the forefront of a European migration crisis.
Since then, the number of people arriving has decreased. However, Greek authorities stated that an increase in attempted arrivals through the Greek islands and the Turkish land border had occurred recently.
Greece has urged Turkey to adhere to a 2016 agreement with the European Union in which Turkey agreed to limit the number of migrants coming to Europe in exchange for aid in the billions of euros.
Turkey claims to have increased its efforts to stop people from smuggling.
