Mozilla Will Only Accept Crypto Donations in PoS Cryptos

Mozilla is attempting to put its environmentally-conscious community at ease by only accepting donations in Proof of Stake (PoS) cryptocurrencies. Mozilla is the company behind the internet browser, Firefox.
Mozilla recently announced in a blog post that it was changing its policies around donations to fall in line with its climate commitments. The company went on to say: “Mozilla will no longer accept ‘Proof-of-Work’ cryptocurrencies, which are more energy intensive.”
The company also said that the main motivation behind this move is its self-imposed climate commitments that were announced in January 2022. The aim for the company’s climate commitments, according to Mozilla, is to reduce their greenhouse gas footprint year over year, until it becomes carbon-neutral.
All cryptocurrency donations were initially paused in January this year. However, the company has now opened crypto donations back up after a review period. During the review period, Mozilla assessed community sentiments and conducted research into the energy usage of various cryptocurrencies.
Mozilla’s review period concluded that cryptocurrencies built on Proof of Work blockchains are too energy intensive for the company to support. Mozilla stated: “Proof of Work cryptocurrencies can significantly increase our GHG [greenhouse gas] footprint due to their energy intensive nature.”
By rejecting all cryptocurrencies that are non-PoS, Mozilla is blocking donations in Bitcoin (BTC), which is the largest cryptocurrency in terms of market cap. Ether (ETH) is also blocked until the upcoming Merge happens – an event that will see the Ethereum blockchain shift to PoS.
Mozilla will release a list of accepted cryptocurrencies by the end of Q2, 2022. Some of the coins that are already accepted include Binance Coin (BNB), Solana (SOL), and Avalanche (AVAX).
