Morton will leave US Treasury Department
Budrigannews.com – John Morton, the first climate counselor for the U.S. Treasury, will be leaving on Friday. However, he is confident that his work coordinating climate change policies across the department will continue even after the Biden administration has left office.
In April 2021, Morton joined Treasury from Pollination Group, a climate change advisory and investment firm. He told Reuters he was going back to the private sector, but Treasury would hire a replacement and continue operating the “climate hub” he led.
In an interview, he stated, “I’m really hopeful that we potentially have turned the corner where the economic imperative and the risk associated with inaction… is more firmly understood.” I believe that will provide the agenda with continuity well beyond the Biden administration.
According to Morton, the department has also gained climate-related expertise in a variety of areas, including economic policy, domestic finance, international affairs, and tax policy, through targeted hiring over the past two years.

The department now has dozens of people working on climate-related issues, including a few new key senior positions, according to a Treasury official.
