New sanctions being prepared against Haitian politicians

Budrigannews.com – Canada’s foreign minister stated on Friday that the country will impose additional sanctions on Haiti’s political elite. He accused the politicians of assisting criminal gangs in enhancing their influence in exchange for money.
After a G7 meeting in Muenster, Germany, Melanie Joly told Reuters by phone, “Our goal is to put maximum pressure against these political elites.” She stated, “There will be additional sanctions coming,” without providing any additional information.
“The gangs have been using politicians to increase their influence, as far as we are aware right now. In addition, politicians have been benefiting from the gangs themselves at the same time. Consequently, “this is a vicious cycle that we wanted to break,” she stated shortly after the earlier announcement of joint U.S.-Canada sanctions on Friday.
Since President Jovenel Moise’s assassination in 2021, Haiti’s gangs have gained more power, making it more difficult for Prime Minister Ariel Henry to restore order.
