Migrant works for Italian Parliament
Budrigannews.com – After his family was accused of mishandling funds and exploiting staff at two organizations meant to assist immigrants, Italy’s sole Black lawmaker resigned from his left-wing party on Thursday.
Aboubakar Soumahoro, Italy’s most well-known advocate for migrants’ rights, has suffered a severe political setback as a result of the growing scandal. He only entered parliament last month after his Green and Left party won a seat in a national election.
Soumahoro has denied any personal wrongdoing, and neither his wife nor his mother-in-law have been formally charged with the allegations that they withdrew funds from two cooperatives they managed and failed to pay workers.
Soumahoro, on the other hand, announced that he would resign from his party after two days of talks with party leaders and widespread negative media coverage.
RAI radio heard co-leader of the Green and Left group Nicola Fratoianni say, “We hope that everything can be clarified as soon as possible.”
“Soumahoro is determined to answer all questions about the matter and believes that he is not involved in this affair.”
Soumahoro did not immediately express his thoughts regarding his decision to step aside.
His mother-in-law and wife, Liliane Murekatete, have promised to clear their names from the ongoing legal investigation.
Magistrates are investigating allegations that their cooperatives mistreated migrants who were placed in their care, did not pay employees, gave staff members irregular contracts, and issued false invoices.
After visiting one of the residencies run by the Karibu association outside of Rome, former Green and Left lawmaker Elena Fattori stated, “I wouldn’t have put dogs in that center.”
Soumahoro, who was born in the Ivory Coast, arrived in Italy as a migrant in 1999 and slept rough. He worked in the fields and at a gas station over the years before getting Italian citizenship and becoming a well-known trade unionist.
When he was elected to parliament in September, his profile increased even more. On his first day in office, he entered the chamber wearing muddy Wellington boots and stated that they were “a symbol of the suffering and hopes of the real Italy.”
A video of a weeping Soumahoro was shared on Facebook (NASDAQ:).defending his record over the weekend.I have dedicated my life to preventing exploitation in all its forms. You want to kill me.He stated, “I’m a clean person.”
