Budrigannews.com – On Tuesday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador criticized remarks made by representatives of the U.S. State Department regarding the most recent protests in Mexico and accused the department of interfering with the affairs of his country.

On Sunday, tens of thousands of Mexicans demonstrated in the streets in response to the opposition’s criticism of Lopez Obrador’s move, which was enacted this month with the intention of reducing the country’s independent electoral authority.

According to Lopez Obrador, the State Department “always meddles in things that are not its business.” State Department officials praised the political debate surrounding the electoral reform.

Ned Price, a spokesperson for the State Department, said in a statement on Monday that Mexico’s “vibrant democracy” was reflected in a “great debate on electoral reforms.”

Price stated:

“We believe that a healthy democracy is supported by a well-resourced, independent electoral system and respect for judicial independence.”

At a news conference, Lopez Obrador stated that the remarks made in Washington were “quite contrary” to statements made by U.S. President Joe Biden and reflected a “bad habit.”

Price’s remarks were similar to those made on Sunday on Twitter by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian Nichols, regarding the protests.
