Meta is testing apps for text updates
By Ray Johnson
Budrigannews.com – A spokesperson for Meta Platforms Inc. said on Friday that the company is looking into creating its own decentralized social network for sharing text updates. This could be a direct rival to billionaire Elon Musk’s Twitter Inc. (NYSE:).
“A standalone, decentralized social network for sharing text updates is something we’re looking into.” In an email to Reuters, a Meta spokesperson stated, “We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.”
The news was first reported, citing sources, by the Indian business news website Moneycontrol.com earlier in the day. The decentralized social networking protocol that powers Twitter rival Mastodon and other federated apps, ActivityPub, was said to be supported by Meta’s new content app, according to the report.
While Facebook and Twitter (NASDAQ:) decentralized platforms like Mastodon, which are installed on thousands of computer servers and are largely managed by volunteer administrators who join their systems together in a federation, are controlled by a single authority—a company.
According to the Moneycontrol report, Meta’s new app would bear the Instagram brand and enable users to register or log in using their Instagram credentials.
