Manhattan Prosecutor Hires Lawyer for New Investigation against Trump
Budrigannews.com – The Manhattan district attorney has hired a former senior U.S. Department of Justice official who has looked into Donald Trump and may be asked to look into his activities again.
After two years of assisting with the Justice Department’s antitrust, civil, civil rights, environmental, and tax divisions, as well as some hate crimes, Matthew Colangelo will become senior counsel to district attorney Alvin Bragg.
In the past, he was in charge of New York Attorney General Letitia James’ investigation into Trump’s charity, the Trump Foundation. This investigation eventually led to a civil investigation into Trump’s finances and those of his company, the Trump Organization.
In September, James filed a lawsuit against the company, Trump, and three of Trump’s children. James claimed that Trump had manipulated his assets fraudulently to save money on loans and taxes and increase his wealth. The accused have denied any wrongdoing.
Colangelo will focus on the district attorney’s office’s “most sensitive and high-profile white-collar investigations,” according to a statement from Bragg. Other areas of focus include housing and tenant protection, labor and worker protection, and other areas.
Colangelo stated that focusing on financial crimes “will promote confidence in the legal system by making clear that the same rules apply to everyone – no matter how powerful” in a separate statement that concluded with language James used.
The hiring was reported earlier on Monday by The New York Times.
A criminal investigation into whether the Trump Organization has been exaggerating its assets has been being carried out by Bragg’s office.
In February, there were reports that the district attorney was reluctant to bring charges, so the two prosecutors in charge of that investigation quit.
The office of Bragg declined to comment. In an interview with WNYC radio host Brian Lehrer on November 23, the district attorney stated that a prosecution “could be prejudiced by something I say.” He has repeatedly refused to discuss the state of his investigation.
