Malaysian police investigating landslide incident
Budrigannews.com – As the search for missing people continued for a third day on Sunday, Malaysian police called in staff members from an unlicensed campsite to help with an investigation into a landslide that flattened the camp grounds and killed at least 24 people.
The people in question, including seven kids, kicked the bucket after an avalanche tore through the campground right off the bat Friday while they snoozed tents at Batang Kali, a well known sloping region around 50km (30 miles) north of capital Kuala Lumpur.
According to the Selangor state fire and rescue department, 61 of the 94 people trapped in the landslide are safe and nine are still missing.
Heavy rain has raised concerns about additional landslides, so search and rescue teams have increased the use of excavators and rescue dogs to locate campers who may be buried under mud and debris.
According to Suffian Abdullah, chief of police for Hulu Selangor, police have questioned the campsite’s operator and two employees at Father’s Organic Farm.
Specialists have said its proprietors were permitted to work natural ranches, however had not applied for licenses to run three camping areas on the property.
A request for comment was sent to the farm owners, but they did not immediately respond.
It said on Facebook (NASDAQ:): “Our hearts are closely connected to you, may the deceased rest in peace… Pray for the survivors and the injured.” in a proclamation tending to casualties and their families.
State fire and rescue chief Norazam Khamis said on Saturday that the lack of oxygen and the weight of the mud pressing down on the scene made it unlikely that additional survivors would be found.
An embankment of approximately 450,000 cubic meters of earth had collapsed, according to the initial investigation. The earth covered an area of approximately 0.4 hectares and fell from an estimated height of 30 meters (100 feet).
As they conducted Nurul Azwani Kamarulzaman’s funeral at a Kuala Lumpur cemetery on Saturday night, the 31-year-old victim’s family expressed their grief.
A school canteen kitchen helper named Nurul Azwani was traveling with teachers and students for two nights. On Friday, the day of the disaster, she was supposed to return.
Her husband’s brother-in-law, Mohd Shazwan Ashraf Mohamad Saberi, told Reuters, “We never expected a natural disaster to happen.” This is still beyond our comprehension.

Malaysia has a lot of landslides, but they usually only happen after a lot of rain. Flooding is also common, with about 21,000 people displaced in seven states last year as a result of torrential rain.
