Malaysian Parliament has passed vote of confidence in PM
Budrigannews.com – After an election last month that resulted in an unprecedented hung parliament, the motion of confidence filed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was approved by parliament on Monday, securing crucial support for his position as premier.
After rival and former premier Muhyiddin Yassin questioned Anwar’s support, Anwar had called a session of parliament to demonstrate his majority.
After the opposition argued against it because Anwar had already been officially sworn in as Prime Minister by the monarch, the confidence motion was passed by a simple voice vote, with lawmakers expressing their support.
Last week, the 75-year-old Anwar, who is also the finance minister of the country, signed a deal with smaller political parties to work together. This move aimed to bolster his support. The parties agreed to uphold the rights of the majority Malay community and Islam as the country’s official religion, boost the economy, and promote good governance.
Despite being within striking distance over the years, opposition figure Anwar had previously been denied the premiership. He had been in opposition for more than two decades.
In the interim, he was incarcerated for nearly a decade on charges of sodomy and corruption that he claims were politically motivated.
Anwar’s group did not achieve a simple majority in the closely contested polls that took place last month. However, he was designated by Malaysia’s Top dog and continued to shape an alliance government with the assistance of other political coalitions.
