Latin American countries call for OAS Meeting due to unrest in Brazil

Budrigannews.com – On Monday, Gabriel Boric, the president of Chile, called for an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) to discuss the riots in Brazil, where supporters of Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil and a member of the far-right, stormed high-ranking government buildings.
Outside the La Moneda presidential palace in Santiago, Boric and Colombian President Gustavo Petro spoke of the riots on Sunday as “unacceptable” and condemned “complicit silence.”
Boric stated, “This situation is worrying for our countries, and our region has to have a clear position.” He added that the meeting’s objective is for the “rest of the countries in the region to be able to take a stance.”
Both Petro and Boric, left-wing presidents who came to power last year, have made it clear that they are behind President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who took office on January 1 after defeating Bolsonaro.
Petro, Colombia’s first leftist president and a former rebel, compared the attack to the 1973 Chilean coup that overthrew Salvador Allende.
Petro noted the region’s past resistance to left-wing governments and said, “Today there are those who’d like to bring us back to the times of Allende.”
Petro stated, “We just saw it in Brazil, but it’s not just in Brazil.” It is time to declare that what occurred here 50 years ago will not occur again.”
In addition, the leaders discussed cooperation on immigration, renewable energy, aerospace technology, and green hydrogen.
The OAS works for peace and economic growth in the Americas. It has 35 members.
