Islamic State appoints new leader

Budrigannews.com – In an audio message posted on an affiliated Telegram channel, the Islamic State (IS) militant group’s spokesman stated that Abu al-Hassan al-Hashemi al-Quraishi, the group’s leader, was killed in combat.

This is yet another devastating blow to the group that once terrorized the Middle East.

The spokesperson added that IS has chosen Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Quraishi to be its new leader.

Without going into specifics, he stated that Abu al-Hassan al-Hashemi al-Quraishi was killed while “fighting enemies of God.”

The audio contained no information regarding the new IS leader.

“He is one of the loyal sons of the (Islamic) state,” the spokesman said, urging Islamic State members in all nations to swear loyalty to the new leader.

Hassan Hassan, the author of a book about Islamic State, stated, “This doesn’t mean the group is finished, but for the moment it is a shadow of its former self, they are hollowed out in terms of their leadership and their ability to carry out attacks.”

“They no longer have leaders who are iconic and charismatic, and they haven’t done any major attacks recently.”

John Kirby, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, stated that the announcement that Abu al-Hassan al-Hashemi al-Quraishi had been killed was welcomed by the White House, told the media.

When asked about the reports of the death, Kirby replied, “We’re still working our way through that.”

After Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi’s death in March, Islamic State named Abu al-Hassan al-Hashemi al-Quraishi as its new leader.

According to two Iraqi security officials and one Western security source, the latter Quraishi was Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s brother.

During U.S. raids on their hideouts in northern Syria, Quraishi and Baghdadi killed themselves and members of their families by blowing themselves up.

In 2014, Islamic State seized substantial swaths of Iraq and Syria from the chaos of the neighboring Iraqi civil war. From a mosque in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul that year, Baghdadi established an Islamic caliphate and declared himself caliph of all Muslims.

In 2017, Iraqi and international forces defeated Islamic State in Mosul, ending the group’s brutal rule, during which it killed and executed thousands of people in the name of its narrow interpretation of Islam.

Since the pinnacle of its power quite a while back, when it governed great many individuals in the Center East and terrified the world with dangerous bombings and shootings, Islamic State has slipped once more into the shadows.

Even though its remaining tens of thousands of militants are still capable of carrying out significant attacks in the style of insurgents, most of them have been hiding out in the remote hinterlands of Iraq and Syria, which are currently divided.
