Budrigannews.com – The International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO), also known as Interpol, is looking into ways to enforce criminal laws in the metaverse. However, a high-ranking Interpol official believes that the definition of a metaverse crime is problematic.

The BBC reports that Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock made it clear that the organization intends to keep an eye on criminal activity in the metaverse. Stock emphasized that “sophisticated and professional” criminals are able to adapt to new criminal technology.

Nearly four months after Interpol launched its own metaverse at the 90th Interpol General Assembly in New Delhi, India, in October 2022, the move to police the metaverse was made.

The announcement that was made at the launch read:

“The list of possible crimes will only expand to potentially include crimes against children, data theft, money laundering, financial fraud, counterfeiting, ransomware, phishing, and sexual assault and harassment” as the number of metaverse users grows and technology improves.

Stock added, “We need to sufficiently respond to that,” that criminals have begun targeting users on platforms similar to the metaverse. The organization, on the other hand, has trouble defining a metaverse crime. Interpol’s executive director of technology and innovation, Madan Oberoi, stated:

There are crimes for which I am unsure whether they are still crimes. There is a problem when attempting to apply the physical space-based definitions of these crimes to the metaverse.

He also said that Interpol has trouble getting people to know about possible crimes in the metaverse.

Prior to entering the metaverse in October 2022, the organization established a separate unit to combat crypto-related crimes.

The Interpol global complex for innovation in Singapore is developing a strategy to deal with #Cryptocurency’s challenges.

Following Interpol’s “red notice” to international law enforcement in September regarding the arrest of Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon, the initiatives were initiated.
