How much will it cost to approve Turkey for Sweden to join NATO
Budrigannews.com – According to a statement made by Sweden’s prime minister on Sunday, the country is confident that Turkey will accept its application to join the NATO military alliance, but it is unable to fulfill all of the requirements that Ankara has imposed for its support.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated to a defense think-tank conference in Sweden, “Turkey both confirms that we have done what we said we would do, but they also say that they want things that we cannot or do not want to give them.”
In 2022, Finland, Sweden, and Turkey entered into a three-way agreement to overcome Turkey’s objections to their membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, they applied to join NATO in May. However, Turkey objected and claimed that the countries harbored militants, including members of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
One sticking point has been the extradition of people Turkey considers to be terrorists. Ankara expressed dissatisfaction with Sweden’s top court’s decision late last year to halt a request to extradite a journalist with alleged ties to Islamic scholar Fetullah Gulen, whom Turkey accuses of plotting a coup.
