House of Representatives to meet to discuss debt-Biden
By Ray Johnson
Budrigannews.com – In the midst of a looming debate regarding raising the debt ceiling, President Joe Biden pledged on Friday to “have a discussion” with Speaker Kevin McCarthy of the House of Representatives regarding the U.S. debt.
Biden stated that a debt default in the United States would be an unprecedented financial disaster at an event attended by city mayors.
Without naming McCarthy, Biden stated, “The debt we’re paying on, and we’re gonna have a little discussion about that with the new majority leader of the House, has accumulated over 200 years.”
He didn’t say when he might talk to McCarthy, the new Republican Speaker who wants to link a vote to raise the debt ceiling with cuts to government spending, or give any specifics on when he might do so.
“Accepted your invitation to sit down and discuss a responsible debt ceiling increase to address irresponsible government spending,” McCarthy wrote in a tweet to Biden.
In a statement, Karine Jean-Pierre, a spokesperson for the White House, said that Biden was looking forward to meeting with McCarthy to “discuss a range of issues” as part of a series of meetings he is having with new congressional leaders.
“Raising the debt ceiling is not a negotiation, as the President has stated numerous times; She stated, “This nation and its leaders have an obligation to prevent economic chaos.”
On Tuesday, Biden will host Democratic congressional leaders at the White House. McCarthy’s visit, according to a White House official, has not been scheduled.
The White House has repeatedly stated that it will not negotiate a debt ceiling increase, and it has used Republican spending reduction proposals to contrast Democratic priorities.
Jean-Pierre stated, referring to U.S. social safety net programs, “As for the broad economic debate in our country, the Speaker and his allies have said that they have a fiscal plan to cut Social Security, cut Medicare, cut other vital programs, and impose a 30% national sales tax.”
The President is happy to discuss that with the Speaker because we are going to have a clear debate on two distinct visions for the nation: one that cuts Social Security and the other that protects it.
