Hackers from China stole millions of dollars-Secret Service
Budrigannews.com – The Secret Service said on Monday that since 2020, Chinese hackers have stolen tens of millions of dollars worth of COVID relief benefits from the United States.
The Secret Service declined to provide any additional information, but it confirmed a report by NBC News that the Chinese hacking team that is allegedly responsible is known as APT41 or Winnti in the security research community.
According to experts, APT41 is a prolific cybercriminal organization that had carried out a mix of government-backed cyber intrusions and financially motivated data breaches.
The United States Justice Department indicted a number of members of the hacking group in 2019 and 2020 for snooping on over 100 businesses, including software developers, telecommunications providers, social media companies, and video game developers.
At the time, former Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen stated, “Regrettably, the Chinese Communist Party has chosen a different path to make China safe for cybercriminals so long as they attack computers outside of China and steal intellectual property helpful to China.”
A request for clarification was made, but the Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond.
