Budrigannews.com – Walgreens Boots Alliance (NASDAQ:) will not be doing business in California. In a tweet on Monday, state Governor Gavin Newsom said in response to the pharmacy chain’s announcement that it would not be distributing abortion pills in some Republican-dominated states.
According to Democrat Newsom, the state will not do business with Walgreens or “any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk.”
“All relationships” between Walgreens and the state were currently being reviewed, according to the governor’s spokesperson, who declined to specify how business ties might change.
Last week, Walgreens said that it would not sell abortion pills in 20 states, including states where abortion is still legal and Republican attorneys general have told it that doing so could be illegal.
Walgreens said that it planned to provide the abortion pill mifepristone in any jurisdiction where it was legal to do so in a statement it issued later on Monday to clarify its position.
The company stated, “Once we are certified by FDA, we will dispense this medication in accordance with federal and state laws.”
When Reuters asked Walgreens if it would sell abortion pills in the 20 states where Republican attorneys general had warned it, the company did not immediately respond.
In January, the Food and Drug Administration of the United States granted retail pharmacies permission to sell the abortion pill mifepristone, including via mail, provided that they were certified in accordance with specific safety guidelines for the medication.
