Global Climate Summit to be held in 2023-UN
Budrigannews.com – There will be “no room for back-sliders, greenwashers, blame-shifters” or a repackaging of previous pledges at the “no-nonsense” climate ambition summit that will be held in September of next year, according to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ warning on Monday.
Guterres also stated that he “will not relent in the pursuit of peace in Ukraine in line with international law and the United Nations Charter” during a comprehensive news conference to conclude 2022. Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is one of the founding principles of the United Nations.
He said that he is “not optimistic” about the possibility of successful peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in the near future and that he believes the military conflict will continue. However, he also said that he “strongly hopes” that the war could end in 2023.
In the interim, Guterres stated that he would concentrate on speeding up the exchange of prisoners of war, resuming efforts to restart the export of Russian ammonia through Ukraine, and improving the efficiency of a deal mediated by the United Nations that allowed Ukraine to resume shipments of food and fertilizer to the Black Sea.
He stated, “We will continue to attempt to be helpful, providing platforms for dialogue for these aspects to minimize suffering.”
Regarding Iran, Guterres criticized the authorities’ crackdown on protests over the death of a young woman in custody as “totally unacceptable” and stated that “we are witnessing massive violations of human rights that we strongly condemn.”
Guterres expressed concern regarding “what the next Israeli government might do in that regard” and the prospects of a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu is now forming what is likely to be one of the most extreme right-wing governments in the country’s history following a November election.
He stated, “It’s very important that the whole international community be very clear explaining to the government in Israel that there is no alternative to the two-state solution and that no unilateral actions should be taken putting into question the two-state solution.” This is because the two-state solution is the only one that can be implemented.
Guterres, who is one year into his second five-year term, has made combating climate change a top priority. He stated that he would continue to advocate for a climate solidarity pact that would require large emitters to exert additional effort to reduce emissions during this decade and guarantee assistance to those in need.
The only way to limit global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius is for nations to reduce emissions by half by 2030 and to zero by 2050.
Guterres stated, “The 1.5-degree goal is gasping for air.” In September 2023, I will convene a summit on climate ambition. Every leader should step up, I urge.”
