Since December 26, the Golden State has been ravaged by atmospheric rivers that are rarely seen in such quick succession. These rivers have killed at least 19 people, caused flooding, power outages, mudslides, evacuations, and road closures.
According to PowerOutage.us, more than 24,000 utility customers lacked power as of Saturday afternoon.
The storms have deposited as much as 15 feet (4.5 meters) of snow in the mountains and half of the typical annual rainfall in the agricultural Central Valley.
On Saturday, the state was under flood warnings and advisories, and thousands of residents were ordered to evacuate.
For the second time in a week and the third time since the beginning of the year, a neighborhood in the community of Felton in central California’s Santa Cruz County experienced flooding.
With shovels and squeegees, residents worked together to clean out garages and driveways.
As Caitlin Clancy, 36, shoveled mud on her driveway, she said, “It sucks.” It’s just defeating to go through it a third time.”

Local media reported that homes and stranded animals were flooded as a result of a levee breach in the Bear Creek area of Merced in the San Joaquin Valley as authorities attempted to stop the high waters from overflowing.
The California Department of Water Resources announced on Friday that at least seven waterways had officially been affected by flooding.
Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, told reporters on Saturday that he expected President Joe Biden to sign a major disaster declaration to assist the state in responding to the emergency.

The University of California Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab reported that as of Saturday morning, the amount of snowfall in the Sierras had reached 21 inches, with approximately 10 feet of snow on the ground and a few more expected.
The drought in the area has been mitigated, but not resolved, by the California storms.
While much of the state is still considered to be experiencing moderate or severe drought, the U.S. Drought Monitor updated its assessment on Thursday to remove virtually all of it from the extreme drought or exceptional drought categories, which are the two most severe ones.
